How we check carrier information

Every explanation on this site is labelled with how far it has been checked, and where we quote a carrier we show you their sentence and link to the page it came from. Below is the whole register, including what we could not verify.

The short version

Most sites explaining tracking statuses are generated text with nothing behind them. The difference here is that we say which claims we checked, show the carrier’s own words next to ours, and count the ones we have not got to. That last number is the honest part, and it is deliberately on this page rather than buried.

The three labels, and what they mean

A page or a decoder result always tells you which of these applies. We would rather show you a weaker label than let you assume a stronger one.

There is a further distinction inside the drafts. An explanation that only restates the carrier’s own phrase in plainer words makes no claim about carrier policy, so there is nothing in it to be wrong about. An explanation that asserts something the carrier will do — a holding period, a return, a deadline, a charge — can be wrong in a way that costs you. 146 of our 541 explanations fall into that second group, and those are the only ones we treat as needing a source.

Rules we hold ourselves to

Where checking proved us wrong

Verification is only worth anything if it can change the answer. These are the cases where a carrier’s own page contradicted what we had written, and the explanation was corrected as a result.

USPS — faq.usps.com

  • USPS states plainly there is NO automatic second delivery attempt after a Notice Left. Drafts that implied another attempt would follow were wrong.
  • 'Available for Pickup' and 'Held at Post Office' both state a redelivery CANNOT be scheduled. That is the opposite of the usual advice and readers need it.
  • For 'Delivery Status Not Updated', USPS says they anticipate delivery the next business day. Our draft said it often appears on packages already delivered — that is not what USPS says, and it is now corrected.

DHL Express — dhl.com

  • DHL publishes NO hold period for 'Awaiting Collection by Consignee' and NO attempt count for 'Delivery Attempt Could Not be Completed'. Drafts asserting either were overclaiming and have been corrected.
  • DHL's own instruction on every hold status is 'Contact the local DHL customer service' — it does not promise an automatic outcome.

Amazon Shipping — developer-docs.shipping.amazon.com

  • NotRequired is NOT a bookkeeping status. Amazon defines it as the recipient refusing the shipment because they did not want it. Our draft had it as an internal no-op, which was flatly wrong.
  • IncorrectItems is a recipient refusal, not a carrier-detected discrepancy. Our draft attributed the finding to the carrier.
  • PaymentNotReady is cash not available at the door, not an unpaid invoice or duty. Our draft pointed readers at an official payment channel, which is advice for a different situation.
  • ReturnInitiated means only that a return label has been generated. Our draft said the package was already heading back.
  • Amazon publishes NO hold period for AwaitingCustomerPickup or AvailableForPickup, and NO attempt count for DeliveryAttempted. Drafts asserting those have been softened.

Where a carrier contradicted itself

FedEx — fedex.com

  • Not two pages disagreeing. The first two quotes are two answers on the SAME FedEx Delivery Manager FAQ page, to different questions.
  • 7 days answers the general 'how long will a location hold my package'. 5 business days answers the door-tag path — the situation a reader looking up a pickup status is actually in — and is also the answer FedEx gives to the question explicitly framed as the MAXIMUM, for both Express and Ground.
  • The two are close to the same elapsed window: 5 business days spanning one weekend is 7 calendar days. That is the likely origin of both figures.
  • We tell readers 5 business days. It is the shorter figure, so acting on it can never make someone late; it is the one FedEx attaches to 'maximum'; and it is the one on the door-tag path. FedEx's own hedge is 'may be returned', which we keep rather than hardening into 'will'.
  • Not resolved: FedEx does not say whether the 5 business days run from the first delivery attempt or from arrival at the pickup location. The door tag and tracking detail carry the actual date, so we point readers there.

What we could not verify

493 of 541 explanations are still unverified drafts. Most belong to consolidators and final-mile partners that publish little or nothing in English. Those explanations still work in the decoder, labelled as drafts; they simply do not earn a page of their own.

The sources

FedEx's clock runs from the SHIPMENT date, not the delivery date, so it starts earlier than a reader expects. FedEx also splits the two cases: damaged/missing contents is 60 days US, and undelivered/lost is nine months.

  • File your claim for damaged or missing contents no later than 60 calendar days from the shipment date for U.S. packages and 21 calendar days from the shipment date for international packages
  • Claims for undelivered or lost shipments must be filed within nine months of the shipment date

FedEx defines the status but publishes NO validity period on this page. Do not state one.

  • Label expired means that the shipping label has expired and can no longer be used.

  • Label expiring means that the shipping label will expire soon and can't be used after that date.

  • UPS may deliver your package to a UPS Access Point® location near your home, where your package will be held for you to pick up for 7 calendar days
  • After 7 calendar days, your package will be returned to the sender as undeliverable
  • After the final attempt, undeliverable packages will be returned to the sender

UPS defines six of the seven UPS statuses we hold. Plain 'Delivered' is NOT separately defined on this page.

  • Label Created — We've received the shipment details and billing information from the sender of the shipment. Once we have possession of the shipment and have it moving within our network, the status will be updated.
  • Shipped/On the Way — We've received the shipment, it's moving through our network and it now has a scheduled delivery date. Shipments can stay in this status until it's out for final delivery. Keep in mind, if shipments are traveling long distances, they likely won't be scanned again until they reach their destination hub.
  • Out for Delivery — The local UPS facility has received the shipment and they've dispatched it to a driver for its final delivery. Unless the sender has elected for a time-definite air delivery service, packages are typically delivered between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. (occasionally later) to residences, and by close of business for a commercial address.
  • Transferred to Post Office for Delivery — The sender requested the shipment be transferred to the local post office to finish the delivery. To be safe, allow for an extra day or two for final delivery.
  • Delivered to a UPS Access Point — A selected UPS Access Point location has received the shipment and it's ready to be picked up at the receiver's convenience.
  • Exception — The shipment is in the UPS network, but there was an unexpected error that may result in a change in the scheduled delivery date. The reason for the exception will be noted in the Shipment Progress section of the Tracking Detail page. When the delivery date changes, the tracking status will show the new date.

UPS's clock runs from the SCHEDULED DELIVERY date. FedEx's runs from the shipment date — do not describe them as the same deadline.

USPS

  • This item will be held for a number of days based on the specific service (usually 15 days)
  • 5 days after the first notice is left, a second delivery notice will be left
  • Unless otherwise noted, the return date is in calendar days, not Postal Business days
  • If the parcel cannot be delivered on the second attempt, PS Form 3849 is left at the address showing that the parcel is being held
  • You can find the Return to Sender date on the front of PS Form 3849 if it is the final notice for an item
  • The package was returned to sender and is no longer available for Redelivery

  • Notice Left (No Authorized Recipient Available) — The package requires a signature and no one was available to sign for it. The carrier left a PS Form 3849 Redelivery Notice. There will be no automatic second delivery attempt.
  • Notice Left (No Secure Location Available) — The carrier did not see a secure place to leave the package and returned it to the Post Office. There will be no automatic second delivery attempt for the package.
  • Available for Pickup — The package cannot be delivered. It is available for pickup by you or your authorized agent at your local Post Office during business hours. A redelivery cannot be scheduled for this package.
  • Held at Post Office, At Customer Request — The package is being held at your local Post Office. This is due to a USPS Hold Mail request, Hold for Pickup request or USPS Delivery Instructions request. A redelivery cannot be scheduled for this package.
  • Insufficient Address / No Such Number — The package is being returned to the sender. Some part of the delivery address is missing, incomplete, or incorrect and the package can't be delivered.
  • Delivery Status Not Updated / Awaiting Delivery Scan — A Delivered status was not recorded by 9pm local time on the date of the Out for Delivery status and we now anticipate delivery of your package on the next business day.
  • Redelivery Scheduled / Reminder to Schedule Redelivery of your Item — A redelivery was scheduled, or you have received a reminder to schedule a redelivery before the package is returned to the sender.
  • No Access to Delivery Location — Your carrier could not get to your mailbox, porch, garage, etc. Common reasons are: a vehicle blocking your mailbox, loose dog or other animal interference, address is in a gated community or locked building we could not get into, public utility work, or emergency responders.
  • Arrived at Post Office — The package has arrived at your Post Office and is being prepared for delivery. The package should arrive today or the next postal business day.
  • Out for Delivery — Not all packages are delivered by the same carrier who delivers your regular mail and may arrive at a different time or later in the day.
  • Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending — A postal facility has received a container or pallet of multiple packages, but processing has not started.

  • If not picked up within 15 days (5 days for Priority Mail Express), the item is returned to sender

  • The addressee or designee must provide an acceptable primary form of Identification to pick up the item from the Post Office
